Herxheimer reaction: This is a reaction that occurs when a large amount of toxin is released into the body. This may happen when bacteria die which is often due to treatment of an infection with antibiotics. The reaction can cause flu-like symptoms such as muscle and joint pain, nausea, fever and sweating.
