Pharmaceutical companies are required by law to provide SPCs and PILs with their medicines. These are approved by the UK or European government agencies which license medicines; approving them for medical use.

Healthcare professionals, such as doctors, pharmacists and nurses use SPCs to help them prescribe and use medicines correctly and safely. SPCs are written using medical terms.

A PIL is the leaflet that is included in the pack with a medicine. The PIL is a summary of the SPC and is written for patients.

Where there is more than one option this is because the medicine is available in different forms (for example as a tablet, capsule or by injection) or the medicine is available in different strengths (for example 5mg, 10mg, 15mg).
